The Maypole from Southland Log Homes

Sometimes dreams do come true. When the owners of a small cabin in the mountains of North Carolina decided to add to their small existing log home, “Caroline,” they never dreamed it could turn out like this.

The Maypole was built with the intent of turning Caroline into a guest cottage, providing the perfect place for guests to stay without feeling as if they were underfoot. There are so many unique features in this home. Here are just a few:

The owners wanted to incorporate the natural beauty of their surroundings into their home. They chose to use their own natural resources of Cherry, Beech, and Maple Trees for mantels, countertops, and sink bases. The kitchen cabinets are made out of repurposed barn wood.

Throughout the home, you will find Mountain Laurel railings that seem to rise directly from the floor. Here, you’ll find them incorporated in the balcony details.

Children are a very important part of the homeowners’ lives. They have five grandchildren, all 7 years of age or younger, so it was important to have a special place for them to play. They incorporated a special “Kid’s Corner” which allows the children to play in the same room as the adults, while having their own space, as well as a log home Doll House under the eaves of the loft.
